Thermometer placement on PE FP30 ZC fireplace

I bought a thermometer to gauge temps on our new FP30 zero clearance fireplace and based on some of the Summit discussions Hogwildz been part of, I've placed the thermometer at the top left corner of the face of it.
Been wondering if this would be a good place for it? It's a little concealed by the door and grate above but since the whole thing is a stove in a can, and will be concealed by a stone hearth, this is the only option I really have for a magnetic thermometer.
I do have a laser thermometer, but I'd rather have one on the unit I can glance at without having to grab the thermo gun.

Do you guys think it'll be accurate enough in that spot ?

They sure don't make it easy for you. That will give you a relative reading. You might want to take a couple other readings with the IR thermometer at the middle and right top of the door and see how they correlate.

Ya I'll have to see if it will fit in the centre. As you can see there's not much gap there. But if it fits and I can at least see the needle that'll give me a good idea what's happening.

As long as you can see the needle at all, you will have an idea of what temp range it is at. The thremo is for reference. After a while, you'll glance at it, see what area it is at, and go about your business.

It fits in the middle fine. Just a little hidden which makes show warmer than it really is by about 150 degrees. Think I'll just use the laser thermometer to watch temps. Also when the fan is on that makes it show even warmer.

That's plenty to see what it is doing. That is the hot spot of the insert, so it will show hotter than in the corner.

Mine is in the middle above the door but I have the square door. Like everyone says its really just for reference. You will probably find out that it is off by 50-100 degrees if you check with a good IR gun.

What type of surface temps are we looking for here? Are we looking for a certain temp before we back off the air and get good secondaries? A certain temp before we see secondaries?

I tried placement in both the top center and top left with not much variance between the two.
