Question:
We are installing a hearth for a woodstove, it has a"walk in Fireplace"
look. We must use thin brick, because of the weight of full bricks. Can
you use these on the floor? Will they hold the weight of a woodstove?
And are they heat resistant? ANy information would be appreciated.
Answer:
Depending on the make and manufacturer. Most are actually made of clay similar to real brick so the heat would not be a problem. You do have to be concerned about these points.
1. Underlayment..for proper support and heat resistance, use one or two sheets of 1/2" durarock or wonderboard cement board under the bricks. The exception would be if you are installing on a cement floor.
2. Cement - Use "thin-set" cement adhesive, not the mastic (rubber) glue that is often used.
3. Check the stove manual for required hearth heat protection.
