More fake news, the heating oil prices always rise at winter time, since 40+ years ago when I bought my first house and heated exclusively with oil. I can not remember a year it did not rise. A smart person would top off their tank in spring because you know if you buy that 1/2 a tank /150 gallons during June it will be much cheaper then buying it in October or November. I contracted with my local oil supplier to keep costs down.

Plus, the government did it's level best to be sure you could not add storage so you could buy a winter's worth of oil ahead of time even if you had more then enough storage in your basement.

My house had been built when they actually used nails that looked like iron horse shoe nails and had (horse) hair and plaster lathes for walls. So, it had a fireplace and chimney, firewood storage in the basement, then later converted to a coal bin and furnace (water radiators) , well before oil, so, tons of space in the basement. Probably easier to get a concealed weapons permit in Taxachusetts then expand your oil storage.

CNN running that is like a news flash that says "Warning: Consumers to be shocked by coming increase in new car prices this September!"

I got into heating by firewood when I moved into my current home, gas south became south gas, they did not send a bill for 3+ months, so, I assumed my bill would about the same as in the old house. My gas bill was over $300 (3x increase) per month, they also happened to have a rate increase during that time they did not send out a bill, even though I kept asking for a bill. Then they sent a bill, wanted $1100 "due" to be paid within the week they sent the bill, or they would shut off the gas. I told them in impolite terms to come get their meter off my house and then spent $2500+ putting in my first wood stove by myself with stuff bought from Northern Tools.

Heating by wood is one of the best things I have done. Plus, by heating with wood, I have an illusion of independence from vampires.

I read the article. The increase is based on projected prices of natural gas and electricity. Natural gas prices are going to go up as we increase exports as was the intention of the BBB. All the cheap gas has been accessed. Now we are going after the more expensive to access reserves.

Natural gas electric generation projects are planned 5-10 years in advance and turbine manufacturers are booked for years. So there is no extra NG capacity that can be brought online quickly. Incentives for solar which can be proposed and brought online were cut and wind power projects even ones that were in the final phases were stopped (subsidies cut too).


In short this is a direct outcome of government policy. Send more gas overseas and increase the cost of renewable generation all while AI data centers are constantly being built which no long term plan to cover the increased consumption. Results are prices are going up. Heating oil may be the most unaffected. But historically it’s the most volatile.

I wrote about this back in the 2010 period and lying fear mongering CAP was forced to change their lying website about this insanity.

The USA basically does the same with lumber. We allow it to leave in cheap logs and have people sell it back into the USA as finished products.

One reason for raw export and finished imports is we don’t have the processing capacity. It’s cheaper for the company to export and import than build new capacity. Just because they have a new facility they are trying to recoup costs of doesn’t change the commodity’s price.

Prices always go up a bit when cold comes in. Best we all can do is have a couple of different heating methods, but I still love my wood stove. My propane heaters are nice, convenient and I'm lucky to work for a propane company. But I still like having my wood stove. Hopefully we won't have a horrible winter, though we here in NE are probably due.

All politics aside this is spot on. The powers that be in this country have sold the general populous out generations in advance. Depending on the way the political winds blow, a new scapegoat always seems to appear. My takeaway from this news story is that self reliance is more important than ever. I enjoy my independence from the BS energy companies if only for the winter months, thanks to heating with wood.
