I have looked this up in my book and I still can’t figure it out. Common Persimmon is the closest I can find but the description says the bark should be in small squares and it is not.

I do expect persimmon bark to be more in small squares. The branches I don't know very well, because they're almost always 30 feet up in the air, including the one in my yard.

I'm not real sure what you have there, but persimmon is not a terrible guess. Any fruit?

Try blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica) - based upon buds (pointy), twigs (stout), and leaves with entire margin and shiny.

Outstanding red fall color.
Branching habit on younger trees - from trunk curve up, curve and sweep down to horizontal.
Bark as shown is not blocky enough for persimmon.
My Dendro TA said, "When you can't figure out what it is , it's probably blackgum".
