I mean, I know it didn't walk there, but it was part of a tree that was dropped off. Its pretty dark, and pretty heavy. Black walnut maybe?

Not sure about walnut. Looks like cherry to me.

didn't even think about cherry. that actually makes a lot more sense.

I was also thinking Cherry
doesn't look like any walnut I have ever seen

yup, cherry it is. OK firewood, should split easy.

It kinda sorta looks black cherry-ish...a little different than what I see around here, but our elevation and soil types are a lot different than Colorado.

Didn't notice the needles. Good catch. Look at the bark on the branch coming off the log on the far left.

100% definitely pine.

the one on the far left is definitely pine. i know that because I cut down that tree! The other stuff I am almost positive is black cherry. there were a few other pieces that are longer and darker from the same tree.

The three on the right are pine as well with some rot. The heartwood of black cherry looks nothing like that.

I will take a fresh cut some black cherry and post a picture of it for you.

they are definitely not pine. I will try and get some other pictures of the longer limbs, but there was minimal sap, and it does not smell anything like any sort of pine. branch structure looks like it could have been an apple or something sort of like that. I tried to google earth where it came from (the tree guy gave me the address). it looks like i found the tree, but i can't see leaves on it.

My 1st thought was pine too, but mature cherry around here looks like these.

Looks like the Cherry we cut this spring. Definitely not black walnut.

Pine, seems to be a favorite of many, it could be that very illusive Porcu pine. [Hearth.com] Tree ID- This just showed up in my yard

Far from Black Cherry. I have tons if it growing in my yard and c/s/s. The bark says pine and I see needles and horizontal branches.

the one on the far left is pine. that is a different tree. the 3 on the right are the ones in question. i looked at the other pieces (did not get a picture) and the branches are definitely not horizontal.

Either way its wood that just appeared in your yard so thats great free BTU's. When you split it you should be able to tell right away if its softwood or hardwood.

Can you split them and take a pic?

I would be amazed if it wasn't pine.

thats very true. If it is something that smells nice, I might put it in a different stack, so it can offset the stench of the russian olive :)

That isn't Black Cherry (despite what I said in a previous post) and since it is Colorado, any hardwood is likely to be planted. Cherry has a distinct sapwood, this wood doesn't. I don't know what it is.
