Truck logging - New Pics Added

Trying to get a head and these will definitely help.
I finally had a chance to get after these two maples before they leaf out and make for a lot more clean up. They were both just over 90' tall and as clean as maple get around here. They were a ways off the driveway down in a hole so I used a piece of haywire and hung it through a block chained around the fir tree in the pictures. It wasn't much but gave me enough lift to pull the logs out close enough to the driveway so I could lift them all the way out with the tractor. I didn't have to buck the 2nd tree to get it close, but might still have to to get it all the up on the road. Hopefully the pictures make it clear.

Very nice Skyline! Is that big leaf maple? I really like the maple here in the PacNW; seems to season reasonably quick (1yr) and burns real nice and hot.

Thanks guys. Yes that is our big leaf maple but a bit unusual having grown up under bigger fir, it grew straight up relatively branch free as you can see.
Woodchip, yes that is exactly the way I do it. Our maple splits really easy when fresh, at least where there aren't big crotches.

Looks like it could be some #9 wire, but hard to tell from the pics.

Sorry for the confusion. "Haywire" is the small diameter wire rope (3/8") that loggers use to pull the big wire (1 1/4") Yarders use for dragging the logs into the landing. Don't you all watch Axemen? If you did, you'd know what haywire is. Or, maybe farmers use a different haywire than what loggers use.

I had never heard of yarder type logging before seeing that show. The logging I have been around in Maine was all done by skidding the logs out to a "landing"... pretty much like on the Swamp Logging show.

Yeah Nate, skidding works great until the ground gets steep. It's amazing they managed to yard the "big" trees back in the day on the steep ground with those old steam donkeys. Those were some "men"!

Made some progress and got some help from my youngest. One tree down c/s/s except a few uglies. Still have one tree to go. Can't quite get it up on the road leaving it whole.

More Pictures! The maple is nice but I still like D. Fir better. As far as cheating....like using a chain saw instead of a misery whip. I really like the tractor bucket as it cuts in half the bending over for moving and stacking. Despite the crazy weather this weekend, I finally managed to get the 2nd tree up on the road c/s/s. She fought me all the way. Had to buck it and snipe the end of the top half as the weight and span was forcing it into the bank too hard to pull up whole. There was 85' of log in the 2nd tree with very few branches. It all went so well, I decided to cut down two more down for next weekend. Oh the fun things this forum has led me to do! Actually, I would have done it anyway. The forum just has me doing it 12 months sooner

Thought I would try the pallet forks to get a bit more wood per trip but decided against it for next time, too easy to over load.


The 2 trees measured out at 1.3 cords total


Next weekend's project, the 2 just cut down and the other 3 on the same stump are waiting.
