Up here there is a lot,of Poplar to be had for the asking. I burn it and it heats the house no problem and lights up quickly. I get a lot of Maple and Red Oak also and season those for two years. The 23 racks in my avatar are all scrounged.
 
Aussie, I think you wood looks like it could be something in the genus Populus, which is the genus of 'true' poplars like aspen, cottonwood, Lombardy poplar, White Poplar, and many others. Populus poplars have rather lightweight wood and don't make great firewood, which is why there are so many negative comments about poplar on this thread.
