Wall getting hot to touch

Installed a p61a about a week ago and I'm just noticing how hot my walls are getting Didn't take a temp reading on them but they're almost too hot to keep my hand on. It's a corner install and I have about 15 inches of clearance (install manual requires 13). Should I be concerned???

I noticed the same thing on a P68 I had recently installed in the corner (45 degree angle) with 16 inch clearance which is the minimum. I have an IR laser gun and it showed a maximum of 130 degrees on the walls running the stove full blast as a test. I don't run full max at all so I am ok. It does get to 110 on normal use. It has wallpaper so I will have to see if it discolors. Look at your install manual or go on line to see if your clearance tolerances without a heat shield is ok. I may get the heat shields but not a high priority.

Cheap insurance and you will sleep better at night.

Putting a couple small fans behind the stove could also help, and move more warm air besides.

Keep your smoke detectors in order as well, just because it's smart. Just so you know, read your manual again. The clearances are 13inches without side shields to the forward corner of the hopper in a corner install. You should be fine but ya if it makes you feel better then by all means put them in. I'd think that you would already have had a problem though if there were to be one.

Just ordered heat shields. I'm sure it was fine, but 100 bucks and I can sleep easy at night.

Gents, I dont think personally I would be alarmed, the combustion point of pine is something like 572. As an experiment I point the wife's hair blower 8 inches from the wall and reached 129

Like I said, I'm sure it's fine, but with the heat shields I won't have to worry. Besides, by keeping the wall cooler it might reduce heat loss outside. That might be a bit of a stretch though.

I think you are being smart.Besides if they are reflective you will gain more heat in the room.

$100 for peace of mind is not a large sum. Some people spend fortunes and lifetimes to try and get that and they still can't sleep at night !

Smart move with the heat shields. Over time the heat will dry out the wood in the wall eventually lowering the ignition tempeture. Then one day bad things may happen. That was $100 well spent IMO.

Paper is 424 on the chart and wood is higher than that. I think I will get them eventually just to maybe direct heat out but I think I am fine for now. Wife doesn't want the look of panels on the wall. A battle that is lower on my list to fight. It was installed using Harman distance specs corner mounted. My P43 is another story as it is on a brick wall 2 layers deep outside. 3 layers of brick in the rest of the house perimeter. Now I know why that room was always colder. I will be insulating in that area soon. The bricks absorb a lot of heat. There are non openable windows at the top portion of the wall that are more horizontal than vertical. Maybe place the heat shields on the lower half to direct more heat out and insulate the windows better. I assume the heat shields direct heat out. I will check them or other types out.
