Want to paint the brick that my stove is sitting on. Are there any rules I need to adhere to.

Please move if this isn't the correct place to post. I have a stove sitting on a layer of brick. The flue goes out of a brick wall. I want to paint the brick because it's garish and ugly. Do I need special paint, or can I just use any kind of paint? The image has been cropped to remove someone.
