Water storage during extended emergency?

I wouldn't want to drink rainwater because of dissolved heavy metals and other pollutants.

Not everyone could do this, but if the watertable is close to the surface and other conditions are met (lack of nearby potential pollutants, septic, etc), one could dig a "dug" well and run a pipe with hand-pump to a convenient place in the house, like an extra basin tied into the existing plumbing.
