Feeling the Heat

Long Island, ny
Renovation beginning today, gut main floor, cut off roof, add three bedrooms, 2 bath. My family of 5 and dog moved a few towns over to father in laws. Fortunately he also has a house in upstate n.y. he already retreated too. I think I have about 8 cords that will get a extra year if seasoning in. Sadly father in law has no wood burning devices to watch.
I'm thinking our 1983 intrepid will need upgrading, it did heat main floor about 750 sqft as long as someone was around to feed its healthy appetite. Not sure how it will handle 1950sqft I'd love a BK ashford insert, but I need to pay for this first and see what's left, thinking kitchen will eat a good amount of my add on budget allotment. I mentioned to builder that I have a liner in that chimney, chimney will be extended, will liner too? He said yeah he will have to, we shall see. I've enjoyed this forum and learned a lot. Hope all have a safe and wood heat warm winter!!

Sounds great! What town? I was born in Glen Cove and we lived in Bethpage (dad worked at Republic) before moving to CT in 1965.

If wood burning with a stove is something you want to continue to do. Plan now. Have them frame out the straight up chimney chase. You need a 1' x 1' chase between rafters.

You'll need a new full length liner; can't be extended unless it was hardwall sections.
What was your existing chimney liner length? If you extend it another 8' you'll get some "a** kicking" draft.
I think all the new EPA stuff needs 15' or better (??), so you'll be all set for any upgrade.
