It's not real the magnet fails around 850 degrees the thermometer would have fallen off.
And the stovepipe is installed upside down with a dented, leaky joint.
If he doesn't keep it really hot, the liquid creosote will make a mess of that upside down stack.

The old thermometers like this had a screw hole to attach it so that when the magnet lost its pull the meter would stay on the pipe.

Forget the temperature, the pipe condition alone is something to be concerned about... holy moly.
meh, nothing a bit of duct tape can't resolve - oh wait, that is what they had tried before. I guess that burned off right before they took this hot pic 
Notice the stove has been freshly repainted. It could have been a solid white before that can of rattle black.
