Why do people think this is good to do ? All your heat is going up the chimney.

If he doesn't keep it really hot, the liquid creosote will make a mess of that upside down stack.

And who puts the seam in the front?

The old thermometers like this had a screw hole to attach it so that when the magnet lost its pull the meter would stay on the pipe.

Yes many do have a screw hole that type does not.
 
He’s probably got a chimney fire rolling with that old smoke dragon and don’t even know it.
 
Forget the temperature, the pipe condition alone is something to be concerned about... holy moly.
 
meh, nothing a bit of duct tape can't resolve - oh wait, that is what they had tried before. I guess that burned off right before they took this hot pic :ZZZ
 
Notice the stove has been freshly repainted. It could have been a solid white before that can of rattle black.
