I need an R-2 for my stove .Could I get away with regular wirecut bricks on the floor if i cut out the carpet and put 24ga on the floor where the carpet was and morter the joints...could I achieve R-2 withis method?

That would not make R=2.

Brick can vary in insulating value, but it is somewhere around R=.5 when laid on edge (4" depth).
So you would have to find some Micore to put down first - maybe 1/2 of micore and then some cement board to stiffen it up, and then the brick.

Brick by itself is a poor insulator.

1/2" of Micore is R 1.1

lots of possible ways to encase it, like:
cut carpet
frame wood around outside
lay 1 sheet cement board
lay 1/2" micore
lay 3 sheets cement board - screw everything down to the floor and some glue in between.
ceramic tile to finish.

That would be R-2

If you search the wiki and site for micore, there are even some sources named.
