Super scary! What to do differently would be to retreat in a 45 degree angle from the falling tree so you are outside of the plane of where the tree is falling. There's always this kind of risk but it seems like it would be less if you were outside of the plane.

I'd also say that there were too many people congested together and nowhere for them to go.

It looks like they were pulling the rope that was on the ground, we do indirect pulls so chit like that won't happen.
