I'm getting irritated trying to find out the truth about chimney pipe. Stove shops want me to buy the brand Sellkirk pipe from them and it is pricey. They say the stuff at the box stores is junk (they are talking about Duraplus triple insulated pipe). One stove shop said they use special stuff that a DIY person can't purchase. Whats the deal guys?? I just want a safe metal chimney pipe up the side of my house. From Tee to cap will be 16 ft. I see Duraplus, Dura tech, Duratech canadian, and Sellkirk. But even Sellkirk looks like they possibly make more than one pipe for wood stove chimneys that go up the side if your house.

It is all safe but the triplewall stuff does not perform as well. It has half the insulation and therefore does not keep the temps up as well.

Ok, so should I get the Sellkirk stuff? Does Sellkirk make different 6 inch woid stove piping or just ine type. There is a guy on FB Marketplace sellimg a thru the wall kit for 230 that is new. If thats the same stuff that I was gonna pay 720 for online then I need to buy it from this guy asap. There is another guy on craiglist that has Sellkirk piping for $70 per 3 ft section which ia dirt cheap. 3 of them.are new in the box.

Yes selkirk makes many different lines. I dont use their stuff so i dont know the specifics of their lines. I use ventis pipe.

Selkirk also makes SuperVent, available at Lowe's and Menard's for ~ $90 / 3 ft. Just like any product, there's good/better/best in chimney pipe, but anything UL listed is going to be safe. I know it's tough for small retailers nowadays, but they should be trying to persuade you of the added value that they can bring to the table with superior service, etc., rather than lying through their teeth while trying to scare you or demonstrating ignorance in their chosen field, neither of which adds value for the consumer.

If you are trying to maximize savings by getting what you can from FB, CL, and the rest of the pieces where you can find them, keep in mind that different mfr's pieces fit together differently, as can different lines from the same mfr. Also, UL testing is done only on systems made of a single product line. I'm not going to say whether or not it's safe to mix & match parts, but it's not tested as such.

I have to agree with them on the triple wall stuff it simply is not very good yes it is safe but it does not perform anywhere as well as double wall.

I don't disagree. I use a chimney liner, so I don't really have an opinion on exterior chimney pipe. I'm just saying that the small retailer's time would be better spent educating the consumer, like you and others here do, rather than making broad statments like "DIY'ers can't get the good stuff," "The stuff BigBox stores sell is junk," and stating or implying that some UL listed products are unsafe. (Yes, some mfr's do have "pro" lines that Joe Consumer can't buy, but that doesn't mean that we can't find top-quality stuff if we are willing to pay for it.)

FWIW, it looks like SuperVent is double-wall.

Sounds like OP may have already pulled the trigger on his purchase, but here's an old thread for anyone else reading.

ICC Excel. Widely regarded as one of the best chimneys available. Expensive, and one installer says he won't sell anything else, but look how he explains it.

. . .Another way we justify the cost is that if one of our installs ever has any problems, ever, if my son or I are still among the living, we will fix it free, regardless of any limits on the factory warranty. . .
I call this "adding value" or "earning your markup," as opposed to BSing potential customers about the safety of less expensive products that you don't sell.

p.s. ICC is available to DIY'ers.

for the record never trust anyone whos job is to make a profit from you, they were trying to scare you into your house is going to be on fire if you get some thing else, complete wrong way around it. I wouldn't buy a ice cream from someone like that. on the other hand I will go out of my way to buy the best from someone who can back up there word of why its the best and I know they are going to stand behind it

Selkirk Super Vent is the one line of Selkirk that is NOT interchangeable with Selkirks other brands of double wall pipe. Super Vent is sold at Menards, Tractor Supply...

Just put in 21’ of supervent. It appeared it was of high quality. And $65 for 3ft is way better than $300 for the stove shop mark up stuff.
