My guess is tent caterpillars. They like black cherry trees in my neck of the woods.
Caterpillar nests, rip it open and they'll all fall out. We used to burn them with a torch on a stick to get rid of them.

This pretty much kills everything, we recently used it to kill honeybees inside a tree the climber found 20-30 feet up.

When I spray the outside of my house, many times the dog will not even step over the threshold and I have to drag her out of the house. It pretty much slays everything and has death written all over it, according to my dog and dead roaches!
We just cut down a huge 38"+ DBH red oak at my MIL's house that tent caterpillars killed. Best to kill them ASAP on the lower branches while you can.
