I’ve been off on my shoulder season schedule. Loading in the am, by bedtime the house is still 70-72, fire is out but I don’t want to overheat the joint with another fire. wake up to 63. I like sleeping in the cold but the old lady and young kids I guess don’t. Time to do overnight loads to carry through to the next eve. All that being said I’m doing a small load of spruce to get me to tonight 😬

I’ve been leaving the mini splits on 66 in the bedrooms only at night if needed. For now it’s working well for me 😬

More aspen to warm up for the night

We've burned probably 5-10 times this year, which I feel is a little later than it has been. No over nighters or anything, just typical shoulder season stuff. It's also been unseasonably dry this year so there's that too. Still burning some well seasoned White Ash and sprinkled in some miscellaneous other splits like some Oak and Hickory I randomly got off my father in law. The Oak and Hickory seasoned a little after than I expected and burned pretty well when I tried them the other night.

No cold kids tonight…. 8 splits of hard maple and red oak for the overnight + likely well into the am on this load. Will have stat set to low once it settles in.

One split each of Red Maple, White Oak and Black Locust.
Warm weather on the way. Probably won't burn again until Sunday night. Saving more wood! 😃

10 splits of ash...
Looks a little moist still. How long split and stacked? How long to cook that moisture off, to where the ends are dry? What reading do you get on a fresh split (if you use a meter, that is.)

Had a load of pine this morning. House full of people sick with a stomach bug so the boost in warmth was welcome for them.
Yea that’s going around for sure

in the nw N.C. foothills...

today's high 64F and steady wind with clear sunny skies..
48F now, going to 38F low overnight...

Grandpa Bear, ornery and stubborn as he is about hardwoods, was fed Southern Yellow Pine, and White Pine atop a pilaf of coals from Beech, Sassafras, and Pine limbs...

He's grumpy about not eating any hardwoods so far this year.

He was distracted thinking about
the Grey Fox seen this morning carrying a kit in it's mouth
across the front yard.(cool!)

on the hillside, down among the trees by the river...

I measured it before I brought it in on several different splits, on a fresh split. It’s been stacked for almost 2 years. It’s between 15-17% with General moisture meter. I’m sure there could be a some that are a little higher, but all of the ones that I picked, which were the larger ones, measured the above on a fresh split.

I did see a little moisture there, but there really wasn’t much. It stopped as soon as I shut the door. It takes off and lights very easily
