I am not an expert in your area but that looks like hickory to me.
 
I am no expert either - but I toss my guess into the ring - maple

The bark and dark heart wood say Sugar Maple to me

You're lucky your town dump lets you take wood! Ours has to "properly dispose of it" aka chip it up and let it rot.
 
Looks Hickoryish, but heartwood says maple.
 
Sugar maple - the center of the logs is a dead give away, also the bark
 
Just make sure you aren't running into ALB quarantine zone restrictions. Free wood isn't free if it results in your entire neighborhood being stripped of trees because of an ALB outbreak. Luckily it looks like Boston is now declared free of it.
