What kind of wood is this??

All I have cut up is the limbs so far. The log is about 24 inches across at the base and its 30 ft tall.
nice log. I would save it in 8' lengths. I like this type of log for slab use, bar tops, tables in a natural state, bark included. To have it milled down/processed wouldn't be worth it
The bark looks like black locust, but the dark interior doesn't look like the yellow/green interior of the BL I split.
Fresh cut walnut will give off a strong smell of burnt plastic. Freshly split the heart wood will have a yellowish tint but turn to the charactaristic deep brown after a day or so.

I will split some tonight and post a picture I got some of the 8-10 inch limbs I cut up and split that. This tree was dropped 1 week ago and I cut the limb like the previous pictures on Sunday afternoon. I don't wanna mess up a nice piece of Walnut by splitting it and throwing it in my wood burner. I got piles and piles of wood this farmer is burning the tops and leaving the limbs and trunks for me to clean up.
It's an easy hardwood to split. I use a Fiskars x27 and a half swing is enough to crack a 14" round.
That truck is loaded with Jerz rocket fuel. NIce load

Methinks you are perhaps too concerned about cutting that for firewood. Farmer wants it cleaned up, cut it and burn it. The chances of getting big money from walnut is highly over-rated anyway. Most will not bring those big dollars folks are so fond of quoting. When I sawed lumber of logged, we rarely saw but were frequently asked to buy some to cut into lumber. It was rare that we took any and made a whole lot of money from hard maple instead.

I believe this fella is on the right track here....that doesn't look like Walnut or Black Locust to me and it does seem to match the pictures in the link he posted, especially the grain color. I believe Lakeside nailed it! Elm is one that I rarely get here in PA. for some reason....
