So I was thinking about a scenario and realized I wouldn't know how to respond to it. Suppose that I have my stove burning nice and hot with a fresh load of wood, and my son walks by with a barbell and accidentally punches out a frame of the door glass. What do I do?

Tell your son no beer for a week. >>

If the stove glass cracks, you may be able to ride it out with a watchful eye until the fire dies down. If the glass is knocked out then a lot of air will be spilling into the stove. It will burn through the wood fast. If you have a scrap of metal that can be placed over the opening that might help, but be careful not to burn yourself or make things worse.

If you need to put out the fire, put sand on it.
Not water (will explode into hot steam and rust the stove).

I normally have a metal bucket of ashes sitting on my hearth, they would work similar to sand. If it's getting out of hand my last resort would be a fire extinguisher.
