So my I moved in about a year ago and am finally getting around to redoing my basement. The previous owners installed a deck right above the vent for the pictured fireplace/stove (I'm not sure what it is).

So I'm up for suggestions on what things I might be able to do. I like the look of the stove so I'm not looking to get rid of it but I guess I would prefer to go with gas if there was a way to do some sort of insert.

frankling freestanding fireplace, horribly inefficient
downsized vent at the wall (strictly against code and may smoke a lot...)
galvanized reducer- should be carbon or stainless steel
no way to safely run gas in that thing.

definitely replace it, have a hearth specialist out to look at it and give an estimate for replacement.

Yep, I'd scrap or sell it if the intent is to heat with wood. What is the fireplace opening size behind this unit? Fireplace depth?

Please also post an exterior picture of the vent/chimney that this is connected to.

I'll get the dimensions you were looking for tonight. I have gas access, so I was thinking of doing that and not wood. This stove is simply sitting on top of a brick pad. Its very unconventional. I was wondering if its even worth it to think of having whatever goes here as a heat source to use in case of power failure.

In regards to an exterior picture, its basically the same exhaust pipe going right out the side of the house. Now there is a deck there, so I would need to go up the side of the house.

I prefer vented gas as an option. Moving this thread to the Gas forum.

Thanks guys, while I was hoping to somehow repurpose that stove seems like its not feasible at all. I'll have to get in touch with some fireplace professional to work out a viable solution. Thanks for the insight.
