Found large tree by home down just wondering if it is worth the time to cut up and use next year , not sure what it is.

Welcome to the forum Sully! It looks like ash to me. If the yellow leaves on the ground are from that tree, then it is ash. BTW, why are you cutting that round into cookies?

What do you mean by cookies? Lol. I am new to all of this. I was splitting with my axe out in the woods, cut the log up and split back there, load up and haul some home. Still Learning all the tricks to this insert burning, terminology as well. Lol

I think I get cookie comment now, lol. That was a small cut but I'm cutting around 12 inch to about 16. Fire box takes 18 but to me seems like a tight fit. I got wood delivered this year and I have to cut most of it. Major pain! From what I have read I see ash burns pretty good.

Ash is a fine stove chow. I like to have an inch or so on either side of the fuel. It just seems to load and work so much easier.

And welcome to the forum, Sully. If ya get a chance, give us a line or two for a sig line. For future questions, it is nice to know what stove you are running, etc.

I'm working out the fine points on this stove. It's fun. Have had about a month. It's fun. I'm one of those guys that can not leave stove alone. It's a new toy. Haha. The gasket is damaged and dealer is replacing. I am hoping that is why burn times have not been as long as I thought. 11 at night loaded, auto fan off by 4 am. Lots to learn

That grain looks more yellow than the Ash I have here; you sure it isn't Poplar? Look on the cutside of the wood, if there is a small "pinhole" in the center of the flat cutside it's Ash, if not I'm thinking it may be Poplar.

I move the damper a lot. Trying to find beat spot. Getting stove top temp is hard. The magnet seems to not read well especially when fan comes on. The it gun seems to give a lot of different temps. Still learning

No, I'm going to have to fork out money this year for more seasoned wood, I'm thinking about next winter now, get my wood collection going

i find the damper usually is best at two positions, fully opened for just starting a fire, and almost closed when sustaining a red hot coal bed. i usually stop in between those two points halfway thru.

Yep - thats the one. You got ash.

"Smart" phones lol. Well glad to know I got decent wood because there is a lot of it. Those trees fall on trails often and they just clear them to the side. The osburn 2200 seems pretty good so far and gives this house some nice heat. Although we have only had a few 30 degree nights so far I woke up to house being around 69/70. Not bad. And the gasket has a leak so it is not burning complete airtight right now . Thanks everyone who helped me. I am sure I will have more post and more questions !

I have a small firebox as well, and although I usually cut my own wood, I'll buy a face cord or two if the splits are 20"+ and halve 'em on the chop saw.

That greenish hue on the heartwood of this piece looks an awful lot like tulip poplar.

I vote poplar based on photo in post #3. What part of Delaware? I am about 20 minutes from Newark in SEPA. Welcome to the forum.
