i've got a quad 4300 steptop, and after 2 years of no use in the basement its finally making its way to the main floor.unfortunately it has developed som surface rust and rust stains.whats the best way to restore it back to its former beauty?wire brush it and stove paint or is there a better method?i'm ready to hit lowes or home depot and pick up what i need.......just unsure what to get.any quick suggestions before i go?thanks

I would say it depends on the original finish. If it was just cast (not painted), pick up some Black Stove Polish (Rutlands makes this as well as other companies). You'll need to remove the rust and remove the rust particles (but not with water - I used mineral spirits).

Not sure what to recommend if it was painted, I know that there are special paints for stove applications.

The polish is nasty stuff, so wear rubber gloves and protect the flooring around.

I use Stove Bright paint for my stoves but it is nasty stuff and should be used outdoors because it is acetone based. Be sure that you pull those heat shields and treat and paint any rust on the stove body itself. And don't forget under the lip of the top plate and ash lip.

And while it is outside, stick a couple of pieces of stove pipe in the collar and fire that sucker up to 500 for a while to get the stink off before you move it into the house.
