Yesterday I saw a tree company cutting a tree down. They were almost done with it. I stopped and asked them what they were going to do with it. I already knew. They were either going to pay to dump it at the dump or take it out in the middle of nowhere and shove it over a hill. This is how they all do it around here.

I told them I would love to have it. I said I lived about two miles away and I had a road access to my yard. Just come up dump it and leave. I would think they would love something like this. It sure beats driving a loaded down truck 20 miles to get rid of it. They said sure they would be right up. We exchanged numbers. About an hour and half after he was supposed to call, I called him. He said they were just finishing up and they would be right up. I never saw him.

This is the third time this year I've had this happen. One of them was cutting a tree down right next door. I told them I'd love to have the wood and offered to haul it off. They said sure but since it was big pieces and there truck was already there. They would be bring it over for me. I even showed them where to put it. Once again, it's not tough getting to my back yard. There's a road right next to it and I'm not picky about where they put it. The guy came over with a pickup load of it and I helped him unload it and thanked him. He said the would drop the big pieces off in a little bit. I went to work and when I returned no big pieces.

Another guy said the same thing and never showed.

And finally I saw a truck loaded down driving by the house. I flagged them down and asked for the wood. They said it's pine you don't want it and I said sure I do I like pine. They said they were going out the road to look at a job and they would be right back. The truck was diesel and I heard it driving all over the hill. They were looking for a place to dump it. Infact, the next day I saw the wood dump in a "park and ride" parking lot near my house.

What's with these guys? They drive around looking for a place to dump wood without having to pay to get rid of it. Risk getting caught and fined for illegal dumping when they have someone begging for it.

I'm thinking about offer to pay them for it. How much should I offer? It wouldn't be by the cord or anything, just something like, I'll give you X dollars if you dump that in my yard.

If its a cord or 2, offer em $50.00 or so.
Couple years back, they took down about 9 old growth monsters to make way for the new town library, I asked whats up with the wood, guy said $100.00 and its yours. I said how much to bring to my house (7miles), he said ok, $150.00 and its yours delivered. SOLD
Bottom line, money talks, and its still much cheaper than buying from a wood supplier.
Ended up with about 5 cord for $150.00

They're telling you waht you want to hear to your face to get you out of their hair without an argument. Its also possible that they actually have the intent of dropping it at your place, but the foreman or whomever is in charge told them not to do it. Maybe there are significnat liability issues (either real or perceived) on their part thats preventing them from following through.

Keep at it. Offer some cash upon delivery...whatever you do, don't pre-pay.

Good point! COD , NOT in advance.

It's all about the $$$ you should have said I would give you guys $$$$ for how ever much it was worth to you NOTHING IS FREE!!!

I think they would have just dumped it than to give it away ....people are funny sometimes .....$$$$$$$$ TALKS

I'm talking with the foremen. I understand if they don't want to do it. That's fine just say so, but dumping it in a parking lot??????

I don't mind paying 50 bux for a load. But seriously, around here would is cheap. The lumber mill will drop a dump truck load of cut to length of slab wood in your yard for 125.00 I'm getting ready to buy a load from them. I also would like something big enough to split to get me through the night.

Uhmm, they could just be covering their own asses? They bring you the free wood and sure enough some neighbour complains about you getting it and they didn`t!! Seen this kind of stuff too many times. Some people just have nothing better to do than complain to the company about free for him and it should have been offered to all!! So to make the headaches go away, or not happen in the first place--they just dump it.

If you know where they are dumping it, why not just go there and load it in the back of your truck? Sure, its an extra step but its still free wood.

I am surprised that they are not selling it as part of their business, if it is hardwood. There is no such thing as free wood around here, all the tree services also sell firewood at about $70 a face cord. Definitely offer them money.

Yeah, sure, we will be right back with it. Ah ha, no problem. Wait in the driveway and watch for us. That is pretty damn funny! Really offer them 20 bucks and see if they change their first destination. My guess is any amount as long as it was as close as you say would get you a load. If you really want to pi$$ em off, call on them at the wood at the park n ride...that should do wonders :bug:

We dont do that around here. If we are taking down trees for a person, we ask the person if they want the logs left or do they want them gone. If they say gone, they are bucked up for our firewood. If it is softwood, it is bucked up for camp firewood. We make out on both ends if people dont want the wood

It always depends on what area you are in. In some places, like around me, they charge folks to remove the wood from their property - and many pay it. They would still rather leave it there. You would think this makes it easy for wood scroungers but it does not. Town to town and city to city - things are different all over.

I would go pick it back up, but they dump it over the hill. This is West Virginia. Nothing's flat here. It would be a huge pain to stand on the side of a hill and chunk this stuff up and then drag it back up a steep hill.

Around here they chip the branches but the logs are basically left where they fall. Along stretches of roads where there are no houses, people just stop and load their trucks.

i guess i should feel lucky,

mine calls me when he has wood and deliver's it in log form right where i want it, got about 6 cords yesterday. i'm still in the process of cutting it up. came in to sharpen chains and thought id sit down here and have a drink. Plus i gotta let the old timberbear cool down. the husky 45 woulnt even cut any of it, it's all 14+" maple.

happy wood hunting

cody

I wish tree companies around here would just dump the wood off somewhere. I would be on that in no time of course it's not hilly here neither wouldn't be that hard to get it.

Ya have to get to know the regulars in your neighborhood and definitely offer them something for it! I've found a couple around here that know I won't sue them if they scratch the grass up and know that I'll make it worth their while. A few bills and a case of something cold works wonders for me...

WOO HOO!!

I was at work tonight and a tree guy who took my number a few weeks ago and said he would call when he had something, called. I left work for a little while to meet him at the house and helped him unload it. He said you don't you need to help you're dressed to nice and I said I don't care I'm just glad to get the stuff. He asked me if I wanted him to call before he brought more or just dump it off. I said call if you can, but if you don't get ahold of me I'll take it anyway. He said it was maple. I'll get some pictures tomorrow. I'm guessing a little over a cord.

Here's what I got. I'm not sure if it's Sugar Maple or Red Maple. Maybe you guys can tell me. I'm thinking Red Maple considering I can pick up the rounds; and I suspect with Sugar Maple being right up there with Oak in BTU content, I shouldn't be able to.

Anyway it's free and it's in the yard.
