Where does my fire go???

Sorry for the silly question, but...if you have a large firebox, and only need a bit of wood for shoulder season, is there an advantage of putting the wood at the far back of the stove? Or should very front, near the glass?

I'm guessing far back will be a longer burn time, correct?
 
I don't think position in the stove affects burn time as much as how tight you pack the splits, or how you orient them to the airflow inside the box.
 
We have a big firebox, about 5 cu ft. If you want a small fire, use sticks and other small pieces of wood. Softwood is great for this. I used to have a supply of basswood for this. Pine works well too.
