I have been noticing using a candle that on the upper part of the door the flame gets sucked into the firebox. I don't think that this is suppose to happen this way but I am curious to know if any Jotul 550 owner knows where this insert is getting air for buring?

Any help is appreciated to know if I need to tell the store to check the door for proper seal...

Primary intake is directly above the door. If you open the door and look at the underside of the cast iron right above the door you will see the air intake.

thanks, so do you think that it is normal for air to be sucked in through the upper part of the door? is that how it get air for burning?

sorry for such silly question but I really want to know if the unit is suppose to have this condition or not,

thanks again.

Absolutely, that is how the Jotul 550 gets it's primary combustion air. I had not tried it, but just did put a lit flame from my lighter over the top of the door and poof, sucked in it was. Also, this is not a silly questions, if you don't feel your stove is working right then ask someone. I am on year two with the 550 and my door gasket is still like new.

thank you, I feel a lot better now knowing that you tried it and that it is the same with yours. I appreciate your feedback and I look forward to learning how to use the insert more and more every day; it's my first year with this unit and I just had it for a month now.

I really like it so far but need to improve on techique...
