Fired up the new insert for real last night--I'll write a new post about that when I get to a computer. Question is where do I measure the temp on the insert, and what should I be shooting for? I'm using an IR thermometer; since the insert is enclosed, I can't really get to the flute pipe our even the top of the stove very well.when it's really cranking the top and door temps are around 500', with the inside fire brick temps at 700' or so. When it dies down a bit the temps go to 400/600. Seem about right?

Top at around 500 sounds right. Your IR thermometer is probably the best tool unless you can find a small diameter thermometer to tuck on the upper front face corners. SBI sells them I think.
