Whoo Hooo!!! Install passed inspection, we will be burning tonight!(now with pics)

I was up 'til the wee hours of the morn last night getting the blockoff plate installed and everything squared away, then home (for a long lunch ;-) ) to get the top plate all secured and cut off the extra pipe up top before the inspector got there. What's kind of scary is that I (thanks to you all and hearth) knew more about the install than BOTH of the inspectors that came out The inspector today even told me that he has a stove in his house that is unlined and that his parents had a stove and his Mom "was having headaches" so he took it out and put gas logs in CO2 poisening anyone? :ahhh:

Anyway, I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to have this project done. It has been an ongoing project and PITA for almost 9 months now (take a look at my original thread), and it was beginning to feel like one of those deals that never gets done. BUT, I am all set and ready to BURN! I will post pics of the install and fire when I get a chance.

Just curious, how'd it go with your block off, I had to disassemble the entire insert over the past couple days, pull out the insert, make and install mine. I'm sure I have at least double the time in as it took for my installer to put in my Hampton. Probably would have done it a little different, but it's done and will burning tomorrow. Also, interested in how much heat you get of out yours, I have a stairwell close by so my house physics aren't terrific.

Dealing with the blockoff was a doozy. My installer had made one (at my request) which was pretty good, but when they had to dig out more of the poured masonry liner it made the hole bigger so I had to make another blockoff. I actually ended up using both, and used enough high temp silicone and furnace cement to plug a leaky dam! It wasn't pretty, but I think it's pretty airtight now. I also have the larger surround, which is alot harder to install than the regular surround.

We did a small break in fire tonight, and it stinks to high heaven! I'm hoping it will go away pretty quickly as I want to have many fires this weekend. The stove is on our bottom floor in our family room, and our house is a quad level, so I'm hoping that heat will rise up pretty well. The family room has double doors that lead up a short set of stairs, which leads to the main level, and the other stairs are right there, so we'll see.....

Just happy to be burning! :coolsmile:

House smelled like vinegar the first time I fired up with new block off, the temps are North of 300 on it, pretty happy I did it, seeing a difference already. Similar on finished look, doesn't look pretty, red silicone everywhere. Leaving the top surround piece off just to monitor the liner and plate for a few days.

Yeah, it only really stunk the first burn, so I've been pleased since. Chilly and rainy down here this weekend, so it's been great to have it going. The kids, wife and I are loving it so far. Here's some pics, I figure we are allowed to post a bunch here for first time burns and then they will be moved!

Looks great!! One question. How far out does that hearth project. Looks a bit shy of 18" or even the 16" of the old code. Inspectors measure that?

Also clearance to that wood trim above looks tight. Whats the manual say for clearances there?

Oh yeah, I was waiting for all the inquiries, I knew it wouldn't take long before the group chimed in on my stuff, lol! I am one inch too close on the mantel, and I definitely need to build a hearth extension, next on the to do list. As far as the inspectors go, read my original post above, I knew more than they did, and I wasn't going to point out my issues that's for sure.

You got 19" to that mantle?? Looks more like 12" (just check the manual) Just a reminder (ghosts of Elk here) the code is there for your safety, not to see if you can pull one over on the inspectors. Beautiful work though.

Understood, wxman, not trying to pull one over on the inspectors. I understand that the code is there for a reason, I will be fixing my problems shortly. Code for my stove is 20" from the cooktop of the stove, not surround.

Nice setting for the Hampton, it looks perfect in there.
The vinegar smell is from silicone adhesive. The other smells are from the stove cement and oils on the stove. You should be breathing easier by the next burn or two.

Well, of course the wife wants to redo the whole facing in some sort of slate or stone! :gulp:

I'm too wiped out after the install to tackle something like that right now. I'd just rather do what other people have done here with pulling up the carpet in front and laying some slate or tile. Shouldn't be too tough, this room sits right on the slab, and we've done some tile work before.

I have a similar hearth to yours. I have looked at some terra cotta-like tile to place on the floor in front of the brick hearth. It will look nice like that. There is nothing at all wrong with brick and i will not change mine for anything...
