Hello everybody!

My house is new construction (1 year old) and sits highly exposed on the top of a ridge. Our builder advised against "anything with a chimney" due to the more or less constant breeze - he said we would hear a whistle all the time. When the house was built, they installed the cheapest, builder grade, ventless fireplace they could find. I hate it and have already pulled the burner and logs out because the smell was unbearable.

So the questions is this: If I put in a high quality fireplace (Mendota, I think), will the wind be a problem? How good are the vent caps at keeping out the wind?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

There are issues with DV units in high wind areas, but Simpson Dura Vent DOES make a high wind cap which is quite effective:

Then again, you might be better served installing a horizontal vent on the leeward side of your home, if you can...
