Talked to a chimney installer today. He is going to call our (Sh)City tomorrow and talk to the code department. He is under the impression that no new wood burning devices can be installed in the city limits! Man that pi$$es me off if it is the case.

Technically you are upgrading an existing stove, not installing a stove where there "never was one."
May get around the code that way

I hope so too. The Vista is in my cottage/trailer. No, we built the house and I originally put in an outside boiler. There was no ordance against them at that time. After the ordinance, they notified me and said I was grandfathered in "as long at there were no complaints." New neighbor, 300 ft. away builds a house and complains. Of course, the city "sides" with the complainer. Threatened "getting the city attorney and DEQ involved." So, I cut and ran. Disconnected the boiler and sold it. So, this would be a new class A chimney installed in the chase that houses my fake gas fireplaces and a new stove in my basement. And yes, Marquette, our code folks DO have that reputation.

Thanks CillyGator (and others). My cottage/trailer is in the southern most part of Marquette County. My neighbor at the cottage lives in the next county over. He said he asked quite a few contractors to bid on building his camp and once they found out his land was in Marquette County they would decline. Our county code officials have a reputation for being difficult (difficult can be spelled many different ways!)

I just had to look it up since I couldn't believe it could be true. I can find no reference to interior wood burning stoves in there.

Hmmmm. I am starting to think the chimney guy I talked to didn't quite have the facts. He quoted $130 - $150 for a permit for the Class A chimney and looking over the above link from rwhite (thank you again) the fee is $25 for an "installed seperately" chimney and $40 for the stove if inspected seperately.

Did this installer come recommended and with references? It sounds like he's off to a bad start. Full of opinions and lacking facts. I would get some other bids from CSIA certified sweeps that can provide references.

All good now. After getting through the info rwhite provided, which lead to a link for the chimney and stove install permit, I was confident we could go ahead as planned. When I called the chimney guy this a.m. he confirmed that it was do-able. So, later thoday (or this weekend) I will be taking out the gas fireplace in the basement and start the investigation into measures and materials, etc.... Thanks All!

And BeGreen, I think I will be checking certifications and talking with some other installers. Thanks.

Dennis, did you see my thread about the EPA ratings on the Progress? I am glad I kept researching. I talked with Jamie at Woodstock today. I will do some measures this weekend and call next week with my decision about which side to have the door on and they can get the stove out fairly quick after I get my chimney installed. Oooorah! Is Christmas coming?
