Wood ash and chickens

I was talking to a guy at the feed mill who has more gray in his beard than I do. I was chatting him up about chickens. He suggested mixing a small amount of wood ash in their feed to increase laying and quality of eggs. He also said that chickens really like the charcoal in ash and suggested that I might want to throw some chunks in the run so they can nibble on it. Anyone have any experience or thoughts about this?

Biochar is used in animal feed. It helps with their digestion. In the case of cows it reduces flatulence.
