I inherited this bench a while back from my grandfather. I have no idea what it is other than is it possibly the extinct American Chestnut?

Definatly not chestnut. Probably walnut but could be mahogany as well.

Agreed. Would be able to tell in person, or maybe with a better close up. You could probably nail it yourself if you google those two. Broad figuring looks like walnut, but the little ringlets and tone look mahogany.

Yeah there are so many different types of mahogany its hard to say.
 
Here is a couple other pictures. I’m leaning towards mahogany. Thanks for the help guys.
