Found these covered a well from the previous home owner. It had a lot of ants living in them. Why is that?

You think so? It’s not as heavy as ok. I’ve had million year old oak and it’s not like this.

I don't know what it is, but I don't think it's Oak. And c'mon guys, it's not half rotten. Far from it.
I don't burn any ants; I don't want to have to experience that from the ants' perspective, during the 'life review.' _g

Old Red Oak that was standing dead for so e time before it was cut and split. The lighter areas are where some decay was/is starting but far from not usable. Dry it and it will burn great.

How would you think it would have any type of aroma after being so dry and old?

Looks like red oak. If it yyrecently had ants in it its definitely not dry. Was it top covered and off the ground?
Top covered but was on the ground. I burned them anyway.

Went to FB market place and this guy is a contractor and needed to get rid of the wood pile. Needless to say it was delivered free to my house. But in gave home some gas money. Score! A mix bag of seasoned and green.

First few pictures look like American beech , ants love it

Picked these up today. Looks like hard wood but don’t know what it is. Doesn’t smell like oak.

That could be black walnut.

I got some red oak over the summer that looked just like the first pics. It’s in the stacks and I’ll burn it in a few years
