There is a maple I may cut..its alive and standing...how do I tell if its sugar maple. Hard maple. Soft maple?

Sugar maple has a brown terminal bud like a sharpened pencil. If you touch it hard enough it will hurt. The other "hard" maple, Norway Maple, will show a white sap when you remove a leaf from a branch.

If you learn to id trees by the bud you don't have to guess as much when it's winter out and there aren't any leaves on it.
