We bought this place 5 years ago. The day of closing while installing the wood stove the furnace ran for several hours. But it's never been on since.
We burned wood with the associated loading and loading and loading. Relighting than more loading and loading. We would burn about 8 cord a year.
This year we switched to coal. Generally it's loaded just once a day. When the temps. Stayed in the single digits for high temps. I had to load it twice.
Imagine if you woke up after not tending your stove for 20 hours and it's still at 450F right where you left it. This is a hand fired so it's not self loading.
I don't expect the furnace still works but I doubt I'll ever find out. I'm thinking of removing it because it's a huge monstrosity taking up valuable floor space in the basement.
Does coal qualify for this or is it just too easy?

). Came close to lighting up the gas furnace today though. Bearing went out on my blower/fan. Been making noise for a couple days. But I have a Daka wood burner in garage with a 500 cfm fan so decided to take that off and put it on my Johnson wood burner while I get motor fixed. One of my son's knows a motor repair man so he took motor to him. I'm going to get an extra motor from him to have on hand as a spare.
