I got an email today from the guy who runs a local day camp from which I scored about three cords of Black Locust and Red Oak last year.

He asked if I needed any more wood. He said they had a lot of trees down from Sandy. I'm going to meet him next week and see what he's got. I saw a tree company working in there a few weeks ago so I'm guessing it is all cut and ready to load up. Nice when an old contact comes back to you with more. If its good stuff, I should be set with all that I have space for this year.

I concur with what scotty overkill said. You showed yourself to be a class act on your end of the deal and the guy gave you another call. Helps him out too of course. I used to do the same when I was a big beagle rabbit hunter. I always showed respect and consideration for the landowners and usually/almost always was welcome back the next year.

Then buy one. You can get a very good wood getter for 3k. That will also serve you well to make supply trips for the house at lowes, carry a mower to the shop if you dont work on your own stuff or get yard plants, get a christmas tree, bring home your own refridge or dishwasher!

I have 2 of them and cant imagine how i could funtion without a truck. I will never not have a tuck, now i drive a small car to work each day when i dont get wood or hunt, these days unless you make 90k you have to with gas prices. But to give you an idea, those who say vehicles are dead at 150k dont know anything or abuse thier stuff. The truck in my avatar is a 1980 k10. I still take it on 3 hour one way trips towing. My other truck is a 1990 ranger that will make the same trips and it has 295k miles on it. My car has 222k miles on it. Many think once something is 5 years old and has 100k on it its junk, i like that leaves plenty of good for those like me. Well you either need to check an old one out if you cant do your own work with a shop or you need to know how to do repairs to save money when you need to work on them. They will need work unlike something 5 yrs or newer that almost never needs anything.

It helps that your road crews probably don't have to put much salt, if any, on the roads-it really eats up the vehicles. Plus, if I'd want to drive it in the winter, a 4x4 would be nice, but also more $.
Where I used to live, more deep in the Salt Belt, dealers sometimes specialized in selling Southern cars.

Check out TCAR on the internet. They are a repo auction place here in Burnt Hills (30 mins from you) They auction off tons of cars and trucks most high mileage cheap prices. I have seen full sized trucks good for farm/wood work go for 2-3 k.

No its not just for dealers. Anyone can go to their site and check out vehicles. Bid on line. If your high bidder they do paperwork with DMV. I have bid on some of their trucks, snowmobiles in the past. Good luck.

I went to the camp yesterday and picked up the wood. It was a little pile of Black Locust rounds.

A nice easy 1/3 truck load.

There were some nasty crotches and believe it or some pretty rotten stuff too! I got two carts, or about a week's worth, of splits and one cart of garbage.


It was a little disappointing, but I'll take it and consider taking this small load as an investment in the next big load from here.
