What is this wood? I wonder why someone painted on top of it? It seemed somewhat light, but hard to split.

Another vote for sycamore especially since you mentioned it being hard to split.
 
Isn't that turquoise wood? I've heard of it but never seen it.

It's nearly extinct. Too much of it was cut for firewood in the 19th century.
