I had two pine trees fall on my house about 6 months ago, ($20k in damage, thank god for insurance) i cut it up and split it, in all i ended up with about 6 cords of wood. In the family room there is a brick fireplace that measures 29x29, it is 21" deep at the bottom and about 19" at the top, the hearth is 15" out and flush with the carpet. the mantle is 12" above the top of the fireplace and is wood. the fireplace has a stainless steel liner that continues through the roof that measures 6" and is 24" off the bottom of the fireplace, it seems that the previous owner of this 1930s house had a fireplace insert. i would love to just install an insert but with every one iv looked at costs way more than i can afford,does anyone have any ideas? i may be able to come up with $1000 with some sucking up to the wife. last year i was purchasing deisel fuel every day with my 5 gallon gas can to heat the house so you could say money is tight. the house is also 2400 sq ft.

I believe the Englander nc-30 is being flogged @ home depot for $899. in the U.S.. If not the price is $1049. Best bang for the buck in a steel plate stove. There are a whole lot of folks on here with them. One thing that is really important with this, and any EPA stove, is that your wood MUST be PROPERLY seasoned to get decent heat and burn results. Other options out there, but I think this is a great alternative in that price range. good luck

the trees were about 90 feet tall and measured about 30" at the base. i have a wood pile 38 feet long 5 feet tall with 16"ish logs double wide and another pile 16 feet long single width 4 feet tall.

Both of the above posters are correct. The Englander 30NC is withing your budget, would provide a lot of heat, but it will not fit inside your fireplace.
The 13NC would fit, but it is a smaller stove. It would provide a decent amount of heat, just not whole house heating, though.
Sounds like a Buck 74 would slip in there OK.

Would the Englander 30 fit with the shorter legs like Hiram Maxim has? I like that look. Bulldog stove.

sometimes to do a job right, you need to adjust the budget a bit. The stove will be with him for the next 20+ yrs. so IMO it would be much better to get a bigger stove that fits than to get a smaller stove that you learn on then have to update. Don't ask me how I know this... :red:

That's with the NC 30 legs. I think it can be mounted on the NC 13 legs which are 3-4 inches shorter. I'm sure BB will chime in to clarify once he sees this.BrowningBAR said:

yeah the deisel is going into the furnace, i have gotten pretty good at bleeding it after doing it every day for a couple months.
The 29 3/4" height is WITH the 6" legs on a 30. I know. One has sat in my fireplace since 2006 when I took those 9" legs that come with it off and replaced them to get it in a 30" high fireplace.

Yes, that is an option. You need to come to terms with your budget, though. If $1000 is the limit, then we will suggest stoves, but you will have to find them used as oppose to new, which could take a while to find the right fit (All four of my stove purchases have been used).
