Worth Making The Trip To Canada

I'm very interested in some Canadian wood burning products, but have found them to be
rather "pricey" here. From anyone's personal experience, would it be worth my time & money
to make the 5-6 hr. trip to Canada to purchase???

Right now our dollar will cost you about $0.80 USD, so if the taxes don't get you (between 7% and 14% possibly) and you don't have to pay duty on it a the border, it may be a good deal.

I have thought the same thing living in NH about 2 hours from the border.

The Canadian dollar has dropped significantly as the price of oil has come down.

It was at parity or above the US dollar for most of the past year. So right now at 0.78 cents US per $Canadian is a pretty good deal. I'm thinking of going to the nearest Lee Valley to stock up on some gardening stuff for that reason alone. So you probably could get a good deal on a Pacific Energy, and perhaps a fairly cheap price on an SBI stove like a Drolet or Enerzone Solution.

You should certainly make back up your gas and time. Because those are made in Canada you should be duty-free. Thank NAFTA for that one.

I'm not sure about the taxes. Its hard to get a straight answer.
I bought a plow in Ontario this summer and had to spend quite a bit of time at the border before someone looked up the law that said farm equipment is exempt. But at that point our dollar was at par. So with the stronger dollar this could be the way to go.

Do your research . . . and check out the exchange rates.

A few years back I crossed the border to buy a Honda ATV . . . namely because the exchange rates resulted in some significant savings.

However, I checked with the dealer first who informed me of any additional costs, how to get it across the border, how to register it, etc. It was actually a pretty simple process with a minimal amount of paperwork . . . definitely worth the time and drive for me.

I would do it. We cross over and buy things from you guys all the time.
Seriously with the Cdn dollar in the crapper (new three year low today) you couldn't be better. You are saving 20%+
I bought a large item (Honda generator) in WA and didn't have to pay sales tax cause I was exporting it. Maybe if you buy it in Onterrible they will cut you the same deal. You will probably still get dinged with GST. (5%).

Watch the exchange rates, but right now would be a great time to do it. $1 US = 1.25 Canadian. In mid August, the Canadian dollar was ahead of ours.

I bought my T6 in Canada. As long as its manufactured in Canada there are no duties or taxes. NAFTA. Just make sure the dealer gives you an itemized reciept and there is a nameplate visible on the stove showing place of manufacture. The pacific Energy's are made in Canada so no problem. I bought mine in St. Stephen NB and the guy from the stove shop escorted me accross the border. Just wish I had waited a few weeks to get the better exchange.

BTW. The T6 was more in Canadian dollars; however, it evened out with the exchange rate.

I would think you might save a decent amount of money. And with the price of oil sinking as well, it`s not even gonna cost you a whole lot for gas either :coolsmile:
