straight, no bends, almost no bark

back the truck right up to it
about 2 miles from home

The Cons:
Im assuming that vine is poisen ivy
that may be the biggest poisen ivy vine Ive seen in a long time
I get poisen ivy, although not real bad
the vine goes all the way up the 40 foot tree

What say you?

If that really is poisen ivy You should call the Guiness book of world records cuz I aint NEVER seen any that big. If you can get that vine pried offn that tree once its down I'ld say slap on some gloves and go for it!

yup, im a bit of a wood snob and this might just push me over the edge. Normally I wouldnt think twice about BL, but I would rather not be scratching myself silly for the next few weeks. The wife says I scratch myself enough without poisen ivy.

Buy some cheap gloves that you can throw away and get some technu, cut it, toss the gloves and take a shower scrubbing yourself with the technu, only drawback is the technu stinks.

Anyone else in your family have bad reactions with poison ivy? You're gonna have to cut that vine and pull it off the trunk. The oils are sure to get everywhere. I have no reaction, but my if my wife so much as walks near poison ivy, she starts to itch. So even if I c/s/s the wood, there is a high probability that she might put a log on two on the fire at some point....and then wonder how she got poison ivy in the middle of winter..

when i have serious poison ivy vines to deal with, i go the the thrift store and buy the cheepest used clothes i can find, usually less that $5 for pants and long sleeve shirt. some cotton or old used work gloves, i put vinyl gloves over the work gloves, rip off the poison ivy, take all the outerwear and throw them in the trash.

i would not pass up sweet black locust score.

Yes that's poison ivy. Cut the vine with an ax an pull off tree once its down. Wear long sleeves and gloves. Do not cut the vine with the chainsaw unless you want to spray it all over.
I cut about 30 cherry trees down with poison ivy one had a vine even larger then the one you are looking at. See any white berries? They might be dried up now. But they are to be avoided as well. Good luck.

I knew I dude that used to EAT poison ivy leaves swearing that it kept him immune. I dunno I don't have the nads to try it.

Cut and split that baby! Take your time and carefully remove the vine as soon as you drop the tree, that is some promo wood, worth the rash for a week or so IMHO.

I have cut the vines and wrapped a chain to it and the truck to pull vines off trees before. Just make sure you are far enough away so any falling limbs that get pulled off too misses you. I have a long 1/2 " cable and a long Kevlar line for those purposes or when I need to add some influence while felling a leaner.

I like the idea of jusr pulling it off the standing tree with a truck. Cut the bottom with an axe wrap a chain and go for it! Too much good wood there to pass up.

How sure are we this is poison ivy and not grape. Anything approaching that big at my place is grape.Someday I'll post a picture of my biggest grape, out by the gate. It's a good 6 inches or more in diameter.
