Yet another wood id

Caught the DOT knocking down this big booger at the side of I-95, and grabbed all I could. Had to leave the 36"+ rounds...

Could find any foliage for better ID... any ideas what this stuff is?

I would have to say Hickory, note the small brown mineral spots in the wood, this is the result of bird-peck and is very common in hickory. Plus the fact that there are no visible medullary rays.

Yeah you fellas could be right about the Hickory...either way it's primo stuff....

Hickory also, and one Im not familiar with. Im thinking Pecan. Its very old. Lucky you. I dont know what your other rounds are. There is another species in there too.
I think the bird is yellow bellied sap suckers. I find the trees with those marks too.

You would smell it, if it was oak.
You'll know if it is hickory for sure when you split it.

I have several of what I think I ID'ed as pignut hickory. Typically does have bird peck damage and the bark mostly hangs on for dear life even after splitting and sitting, very flexible too, hard to break compared to others.

I assumed the bird-peck damage illustrated was woodpeckers.

I'll get to splittin' and see what it smells like.
