I've been watching ebay and CL for "steal" deals on another large stihl saw as the only large saw I have is a fairly new 440 magnum. I saw an ad a few weeks ago for a "390 for $300 or trade for hunting items". I called the guy and it turned out what he mostly wanted was guns or ammo. Almost had a deal worked out for some old ammo of mine (hoarded ammo many years ago like some folks here hoard firewood), but ultimately someone showed up with the cash first.

Since then I've been contacting all the local CL ads around here looking for a similiar deal. The best part for me is that I paid $8 - 9.00 years ago for stuff that today is going for $20/box. Had a guy interested on an ad for an 041 farm boss last week, but again, he took the $200 cash he wanted instead.

Then today an ad appeared for a 440 magnum for $325. It was an older model, but the ad claimed it started on the first pull (I've never owned a saw that started on the first pull!) Sure enough, the guy was definitly interested in ammo for a trade. We met and low and behold, that older 440 mag started up on the very first pull! Ran great with absolutly no smoke, 25" bar/chain. I ended up trading him about $180 (my original cost) of 7mm mag, 30-30, 9mm, and alas, my last 20 rnd box of 44 mag black talons!

Now I have 2 MS440 mags, one new, one old. Now if I could just get that darned 031AV running I'll be set!

Thanks guys, just good trading. I think ammo will be the next currency. I went to my stihl dealer today to see if he had an old used sproket cover for the saw, that's about all it needed, cut with it steady to mid-afternoon. I was telling him about the ammo trade for it and he goes "what kind of stuff do you have"? I ended up going back home about 10 minutes away and coming back with the rest of my 7mm mag and 30-30 ammo. Got $115 for that and used some of it on an old sproket cover and one of those little 12 volt stihl grinders/stones. It was nice to see cash coming out of his drawer to me for a change! ;lol
