Well my Nov 2012 stuff will sit for a while longer than your stuff Joful, but not much. Hrmmm... if I could just squeeze one more cord in my stacking area and pray for 3 cords burned per year, not 4? Hehe. I guess I won't know how much wood my 1954, 1974 sq ft, one story ranch will use in lower CT until I actually go for it.

Depending on wood species and the quality of the stacking location, it is not out of line to burn wood that has been CSS for one full year. Fairly standard for softwood burners that want dry wood and better than most burners that just burn what was cut that summer.

We don't have oak or really any of the dense hardwoods so if you want to burn that stuff then be sure you have space to stack it for a long time.

I just realized your talking about getting an insert, have you considered a freestanding stove? I believe they put out more heat mine kept my 1800sq ft ranch pretty warm all winter even with sub par wood.

Freestanding would be optimal but it would increase install costs quite a bit. The location of my insert isn't so bad and I'm hoping my house layout works well. Also the wife is not a fan of stoves, I'm lucky she didn't fight too much with insert. Hehe.

When a pickup truck of maple materialized this morning, she just about killed me. I think, 8 cords will be my "wife limit."

She will change her tune half way through the winter when shes nice and warm and theres a little extra cash around from the savings on the regular heat bill. Just make sure to keep the stove area nice and clean and try not to get wood splinters all over the house I found out my wife doesn't like that at all. Also youll just have to make sure shes not home when your bringing more wood home get it there and css before she knows it.
