on my 25-pdvc should I bore holes in the stoves exhaust pipe or just the duravent and tighten to the stove ?

I drilled (3) 1/8" holes through both pipes. Makes the installation sturdier from the beginning.

Id recommend it, even if the manual doesnt say so. Ive got three in mine, its just a little piece of mind.

In the manual that came in the wall thimble box for my excel pipe says to drill 2 1/8 inch holes and put screws into the pellet stove pipe exhaust and stove adapter. I will probably put 3 in myself though just to match the screws in the rest of the pipe.

The Excel instructions say to pre-drill if the pellet stove pipe exhaust is thick. Given that the Harmon exhausts are cast iron (read hard & brittle) I'm thinking it's better to pre-drill these -- especially since self-taping screws BROKE as my installer was installing mine! Does that make sense?

Thanks, Alan

PS: You say that "we us 1/4 #8 self tapping..." Is that 1/4 inch in length?

I didn't know that the Harman exhausts were cast iron. As you mentioned, that is hard and brittle, and me personally would be afraid of cracking it. I might be tempted to drill and tap the threads and use a machine screw.....any opinions on that?

Yep. 1/4" long.

I pre-drilled small holes. Made it easier and faster to bite in.

If the screw length is only 1/4" long, then you are fastening the outer later of the stove pipe to the exhaust pipe, and not going deep enough to pierce the inner layer of the stove pipe, correct???
