I am fascinated by the difference in prices for a ton of pellets in different areas of the country. I have just purchased and put in the basement 8 tons of Turmans at a price of $205.00 a ton. I thought this was cheap indeed. They are fresh from the mill, as they came right off the trailer.

Does this qualify me for admission into the Pellet Pig Club or what? I have a Harman P68 and it loves the Turman brand. I also use Energex but have found that the stove works best with the Turmans. Great heat and little ash.

That is VERY cheap for Turmans.....they're a real good pellet. I'd love to get them at price around here.

As for Pellet Pig qualification, we'll need to see a pic or 2 of the stash on the pallets first. ;)

you are correct- Turmans come from northern Virginia, which is in all likelihood the reason the OP's were so cheap....not all that far. A fairly large percentage of a dealer's cost of pellets is the transportation charge from the mill to the retail location. Turmans for me cost me about $50 per ton to transport to our location. Of course, we dont "eat" that cost. We factor that in to the price of the pellet (the "landed") cost, and that pushes up the price of the product to our customers. Some retailers are close enough to the mill to actually pick up product from the mill, further lowering the cost of the product. To put it simply, close proximity of the mill has a direct effect on the price of the product.

The pellets were bought at Westie's in Shermansdale, Pa. They have a limited supply at that price. The pre-buy ends, I think, at the end of April. They have their own truck that hauls them so they can keep the transportation cost a little lower than a business that has to have a third party bring them in. When I talked to the owner, she said that they just wanted to make a living, not try to get rich overnight at the expense of their customers. Nice people and very down to earth.

sadly we figure in the shipping in our cost figures, so I cant really say how much of a profit margin there is there, but I agree $205 is cheap for such a quality pellet. I can also tell you its considerably below my "landed" cost.....so, grats!

Ok, so if the price of Okanagans is in the $175 range there, does that then make them, by diffinition a shoulder pellet? LOL!

Nope... Because Somersets by me are $175 and everywhere else they are $250 +/-.

All in Shipping... Whether supplier delivers or you pick up. Cost, Fuel, Distance.....

But I would love to get some Okies for $175...... Mama wouldn't be able to stop the madness! !! I would be buying like Crazy. ;)

Well I'm scratching my head. If youze guys say it's all in the freight.....can't get much further freight than cross country train load. Uses a ton more diesel than a truck?

So if this was the case Okies would be $150-175 a ton on the west coast while they're $300 a ton plus here....
