I would say some type of Hickory. Looks like a live tree...any nuts on the ground that you can get a pic of?
Book sez Pignut and Shagbark usually have five leaflets on the compound leaf, so I'm guessing it's something else. Shellbark range is in your area, but it says it's uncommon, and is supposed to have orange twigs. Frankly, I'm baffled...
At any rate, it is primo hardwood...remember where it is and grab it when you can.
I'll +1 your +1. Definitely some kind of Hickory...I'm just baffled as to which one it might be. Dairyman hit the jackpot!I will stick with hickory on this one.
So it's some kind of hickory.... it will be in splits very soon.
"...leaves that are very aromatic when crushed." There's a good test.Looks like mockernut hickory
Yeah, lookit the bark in that last pic...real similar to Pignut.Still screams hickory..
Had to tell from here, but they look kinda hairy... Didn't take you long to get back over there when you heard "Hickory," did it?I noticed the buds so I took a pic of some to.

It makes little sense to leave it.It's all done, from the break in the trunk down it was 2/3rds punk.
Should I drop the small oak it broke the top out of when it fell?
With the leaves still on it, hard to believe that was punked out...maybe it was dying and that's why it broke off where it did.from the break in the trunk down it was 2/3rds punk.
