Can anybody tell me where I can find a diagram or explanation of what the inside of my stove looks like and how all the air/smoke moves through the system?

Yeah, I read through the BK performance threads back to 2015, plus lots of other threads. I dread large purchases until I do enough research to convince myself to spend money. And I hate dealing with bad salesmen, so I try to learn as much as possible beforehand.

I think it's hereditary. Before the internet, my dad used to subscribe to Consumer Reports and other publications and was on the up-and-up on various things. Now with forums like this, it's easier get much more real-world feedback. I grew up around wood stoves in the smoke dragon era, and after being away from wood burning for quite a few years, I soon learned here that "I didn't know what I didn't know" about these newer wood stoves.

I only wish I would've researched this in 2015 when we moved into this house and pulled the trigger back then. But there always seems to be other priorities when dealing with a move into a different home. This new stove has completely altered our lifestyle. Burning wood is no longer an everyday hassle, it's more like a hobby now. Until the honeymoon wears off and I have to cut wood again. ==c

Coincidentally, I live in Marysville! But I've lived in several other areas over the years so you never know...if there's a way to send a PM on this forum, shoot me a message and we can chat more about it.

Please forgive the promotional aspect. But this video clearly addresses the question of airflow thru your SC30.

For what it’s worth.. Blaze King, BKVP and their team have been awesome to deal with.

I’m not one to over hype but I called FPX, Hearthstone and others and waited forever, couldn’t reach anyone etc and gave up.

I ask a lot of questions and got them answered quickly on here and on the phone.

Dealers also push on bias or incentives. I use to sell cars... I know this all too well. I went with BK, not based on price because they aren’t the cheapest, but on quality and customer service.

This forum, by far, has been the most helpful in my purchase of a new wood fired insert.

No doubt, this became apparent and influenced my decision, along with a few other factors. But, as nice as BKVP is, I hope I never have to talk to him. Unless it's over a beer...;)

Have one of those for the princess insert? I'm curious how the air moves in my stove coming from the bottom right side.

Hey guys, I'm happy to say that after much research, I've decided to buy a BK Ashford 30 to replace my old Fisher Grandma Bear that is well over 30 years old. I'm excited that I won't have to start 2 new fires a day because that is quite annoying. I've been reading all of these BK Performance Threads and have already learned a lot from your experiences. Cheers!

I think I know but gotta ask......By “start two new fires a day” you mean, reload twice a day, correct?

No, I meant that currently with my pre-EPA smoke dragon I have to start a fire in the morning (before work) and then start whole new fire (with newspapers and kindling) when I get home from work because I don't even have enough coals to get a new fire going. I've been doing that for 5 winters and I'm thrilled that I won't have to do that with the new BK I'm getting in a few weeks.

Gents-Chimney cap light off today or last night by the looks of it. Saw some poofy crunchy black stuff on the ground in my yard. Not a lot of it, but I did see some. Sooteatered my chimney about 3 weeks ago- not sure how well it cleans my square cap though. Not a whole lot came out when I did I was done BTW.

Now we have very very gusty winds here and I have tremendous draft at times when that happens.

So. 1,000,000$ question. Big deal, no deal or in between? Of course I'm not crazy about any kind of fire that's not in my stove specifically.

I cant be alone in having this happen, but many folks may have it happen and not even know it.

I get sometimes when windy , some black thin films, looks like plastic. Real shinny. I dont think it is a sign of chimney fire.

Flakes like you are describing no not evidence of a chimney fire. Poofy black stuff like he did yes.

Good to know Thank you.

As far as burn times go active cat means nothing at all to me. Yes I could have an active cat for 24 hours. But if I tried that today my house would be in the 50s. As it is I came home to 66 and had to reload and open it up. With current wind and temp I am getting about 8 hours with a princess.

So is the stove not large enough to heat your home or is there something else going on? 12 hours between reloads, with coals left, should be easily doable with the grandma bear.

How often do you reload on days that you are home?

What are your temperatures? How bad is the wind?

Low 30s today with wind steady in the upper 20 mph gusts to upper 30mph. Not abnormal here at all.

12 hours out of a fisher???? Maybe but it would take weekly cleanings if you are running it that low.

So do you think I had A full blown chimney fire?

Next steps?
