Wednesday the Harman P35i was to arrive for installation. The crew arrived and went right to work. I watched as they installed the surround for the fireplace in place thinking to myself, " Hmmm, this is a cast iron surround, the one we looked at was a steel surround". They ran the stainless liner up the chimney, capped it off and proceeded to finish up downstairs. In they came with the stove, but NOT a P35i. I looked and it was a 52i Accentra! I stopped the guys and said they had the wrong stove. They looked puzzled and said, "Call the store, we took what they gave us". So I phoned my sales person at the store, and she said, :Yeah, we had to make a switch and upgrade you. They said the were going call me, but as it is a busy time of the year, it went undone. Anyway, I said, "I wasn't asked abut this switch and am not prepared to pay the extra $1,000.00 for it. She replied. "I didn't say we were charging you for the upgrade, just that we upgraded you as we had a customer come in and wanted to buy TWO P35i's and we had only 1, plus the one we sold you. If you want the P35, I can take another $150.00 off, and have it in 10 days. But you should reconsider and keep the 52i". I was so excited, I had a hard time containing myself, but in short, said I could "help them out and keep the 52i". I'm it went, we fired it up and all is well! So I have a larger, and more prettier stove, for the price of the P35i sale price, which I paid $2950.00 for, plus $1300.00 installation. I think I did A ok! and your thoughts?
Was expecting a P35i Harman, but NOT what I got!

in action. 51 degrees out with a howling wind. I have her set at a 1 pellet feed, low fan and we are again walking around in t shirt and shorts. It is going to be a GREAT winter!

I have a harman accentra too set your feed rate at 4 the stove controlls the feed it needs all by itself setting at a feed of 1 only limits you. Yeah I got sucked into that one alternative, enjoy your new stove

On the other hand, a feed rate setting of 1 lets the stove run more constantly and allows the heat to spread thru the house so there aren't as many very hot versus very cool spots. Yeah, I know there is a "constant" setting, but you gotta keep the temp too high (for my liking) to keep from sending a lot of heat outside.
Run it like you want to run it, and how it works best for you in your circumstances. You have plenty of time to experiment and see how different settings work for your house. I run the P43 like that sometimes - especially when it is windy because I get constant heat loss so want constant heat being blown in (but not 75+* worth). Most times I run it totally on thermostat. The basement stove is sometimes run on the probe and sometimes at constant.

Every new Harman owner goes through the feed rate playing game. Some find a use for it even.
When it's 51 deg outside I don't think it's going to matter much one way or the other. Also it makes a difference if you have the stove in constant burn or on the room probe. But in the big scheme of things this is really nit picking. When the weather actually gets cold you will need a setting of at least 3, most of us Harman folk run feed rate 4 or so. Meanwhile if you set your feed at 3 for instance, the stove will only feed what it needs, it may well be feeding a 1 or 2 a lot. Again, when it is shoulder season and in the 50's outside it isn't going to matter a whole lot anyway.
Bogie seems to have found a use in her house for a low feed rate. Some of us though have tried that and we concluded we used more fuel for less satisfactory results. We let the stove feed and trim itself back, recovery is faster with a higher feed rate setting. But Bogie has been around long enough to know how her stoves work for her. With a Harman just because you set the feed at 4 doesn't mean it's feeding there, it's an automatic system. What she is doing is forcing less output. With a setting of 4 then feed rate 4 is the max it can feed when the flame needs to ramp up. A setting of 1 then 1 is the max it can ramp up to etc. you could set it at 5 and depending on the pellets btu you are using and on the call for heat it might never feed 5 but is free to feed from 1-5 as needed..
There is a sticky at the top of the page saying how your Harman works or some such thing. A good read to help understand all this.

If there are uniform small pellets, I usually run at a feed rate of 3. For longer, or inconsistent size, I usually use feed rate 4. As Alternativeheat says, there are specific circumstances where I use the so called "renegade mode" of throttling back the feed rate to achieve the results that I prefer - but that is not my norm.
Do yourself a favor though and read the manual and the stickies on how your Harman works. That way you can make informed decisions to determine how best to use your stove.
