We bought a 1982 VC Intrepid wood/coal stove and the clearances in the 1982 VC material for rear placement on protected wall says 16" to wall, 16" above height of stove if top exit. Right? Questions:
1)Is this material obsolete due to code updates?
2)what is the necessary width of protection behind stovepipe?
3)What is the distance required on all sides of stove for hearth? 16"?

Much of what we're reading indicates 18" and we're confused.

Woodsprite2,

Do you have a copy of the VC owners manual for your stove or the installation manual for your stove showing clearance details?

Here in NC code follows manufacturers clearance recommendations.

Yes. I printed the materials found on this forum. One potential problem is that the information covers stoves made from July 1982 and ours was manufactured May 30, 1982. Our township in Michigan follows International Bldg Code.

I don't know for sure, but installing a woodstove is little different than the process for installing a gas stove re regulations. Building inspectors require a copy of the manufacturer's requirements. There are too many different stoves and designs to have code regs to cover all possible models thus....manufacturer's recommendations.

Have you called the inspectors office for a clarification?

Good luck.

Thanks! We will talk with people at the township on Monday. The plate on the back of the stove and other materials from this forum will, hopefully, tell the story!

Still confused about hearth dimensions and clearances for 1982 Vermont Castings Intrepid. We are installing hearth with sheet metal cement fireboard and tile. We are constructing back with those elements and 1" airspace. There are several areas of the available literature suggested online (manuals, operation, installation) that don't seem to jibe. Help! Just want clean, clear numbers on distances from protected surfaces!!
