Roll up hearth

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

Personally i wouldnt worry about it. If you load north/south you shouldnt have any logs roll out and the door should only be open when you're tending the fire so any embers that happen to get spit out you can take care of right away. Unless you have kids or something you're worried about leaving the door open id just leave it.
Most of the ember issues that we have had are not with log roll out. They have been random pops and bursts that shoot a hot ember out the stove door. Some types of wood do this fairly regularly. Advocating a violation of the manual and code is not a solution. Several options have been given that are simple and will not affect traffic patterns.

... and then I suggested one that’s not so simple. It’s what I do. ;-)

Whatever is finally implemented it needs to protect a full 16" in front of the stove door. At some point during the 100s of loads the stove will see there will be a mishap and live coals will be on this hearth pad. For sure embers will occasionally spit out of the stove. Sh!t happens.

Not only that, but having room to set dirty wood, hot tools and ash pans is beyond convenient, I’d say it’s almost necessary for any full-time burner.

Here is a photo, taken from another site that depicts the glass hearth over wood.
Its a beautiful installation.
